Back-to-school is the second-biggest shopping season of the year after the holidays — and one of the easiest to overpay for if you buy everything in a single panicked trip the week before classes start. The families who save the most treat July and August as a rolling window, buying each category at its cheapest moment and stacking every discount they can.

The timeline: buy-now vs. wait
Back-to-school pricing doesn't peak all at once. It rolls out over about eight weeks:
- Early-to-mid July — Electronics, especially laptops and tablets. Retailers launch student events right after Prime Day, and (more on this below) prices are heading up, not down. This is the window.
- Late July into August — Clothing, shoes, and school supplies. This is when tax-free weekends cluster and stores compete hardest on backpacks, notebooks, and basics.
- Late August into September — Leftover supplies and dorm goods get clearance markdowns as the rush ends. If it's not date-critical, waiting a few weeks pays off.
Read this before you buy a laptop
Normally the advice is "wait for Black Friday." In 2026, that advice may be wrong for computers. Memory prices (DRAM and SSD) are climbing sharply, and industry analysts expect that to push average PC prices meaningfully higher by year-end. Several retailers are already discounting current laptops aggressively during back-to-school events — which means the July/August student deals could genuinely be the best pricing you'll see for a while, better even than the holiday season.
If a laptop is on your list this year, don't sit on it waiting for November. Check the price history, confirm the specs (16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD is the sweet spot for a student machine that lasts), and buy when you see a real discount now.
Tax-free weekends: the single biggest lever
Around 17 states run a back-to-school sales tax holiday — a weekend when clothing, school supplies, and sometimes computers are exempt from sales tax. On a big-ticket purchase, that's an instant 4–9% off on top of any sale price, and it's the most-overlooked savings tool in the season.
The bulk of them land in late July and the first weekend of August 2026. A few examples:
- Mississippi — July 25–26
- Tennessee — July 31 – August 2
- Texas, South Carolina, Missouri — first weekend of August (around Aug 7–9); South Carolina is unusually generous, exempting computers and even bed linens with no price cap on most items
- Florida — a long window through much of August
- Connecticut — mid-to-late August (around Aug 16–22)
Rules and price caps vary a lot by state — Texas caps items at $100, Connecticut at $300, Florida caps supplies at $50. Always check your own state's exact dates and eligible-item list before you plan a big purchase around it.
The category playbook
