The Cashback Portal Playbook: How to Get Paid to Shop Online
Every time you buy something online without going through a cashback portal, you leave money on the table. How a portal pays you
The chain is simple: you click a store's link from inside the portal, the portal tags that visit as its referral, the retailer pays the portal a commission on your order, and the portal shares most of it back with you. Because that commission is separate money — not a discount taken off your cart — cashback stacks on top of the sale price, your coupons, and your credit-card rewards. It's an extra layer, not a trade-off.

The three golden rules
Cashback fails when the portal can't prove it sent you. Protect the chain:
- Click the portal link last — right before you check out. Do your browsing and comparing first, then start the actual purchase from the portal.
- Turn off coupon-finder browser extensions. When an extension pops up at checkout and applies a code, it often "steals" the referral credit and your cashback silently disappears. Disable it, or don't click its popup.
- Keep your order confirmation. Tracking sometimes fails through no fault of yours. A screenshot lets you file a missing-cashback claim, which portals honor routinely.

Cashback rates vary wildly by category. You'll see the biggest percentages on:
- Department stores and fashion — often 5–10%, sometimes far more during promos.
- Travel — hotels and bookings frequently pay 5%+ on large totals, so the dollars add up fast.
- Software and subscriptions — high-margin, so portals pay generously (that's how a rate can top 100%).
- Beauty — Sephora, Ulta, and drugstores run strong rates and stack with samples.
Groceries, electronics, and gift cards usually pay little or nothing — don't route those through a portal expecting much.
How you get paid, and what to watch

- Payout timing: cashback usually locks after the retailer's return window closes, so expect a wait of weeks, not days.
- Returns claw it back. If you return the item, the cashback reverses — fair enough.
- Minimum thresholds. Some portals hold your balance until it clears a payout minimum.
