How to Choose a Sunscreen That Actually Works: Read the Label, Not Just the SPF

Daily sun protection is one of the highest-return things you can do for your skin — but the number on the front of the bottle doesn't tell you as much as you'd think. When independent researchers lab-tested US sunscreens in a widely cited 2022 study, the measured SPF averaged only about 42% of what the label claimed, and UVA protection was worse — roughly a quarter of the labeled value. A "SPF 30" could be performing closer to SPF 13.

So the skill worth learning isn't picking the highest number on the shelf. It's reading the back of the bottle. Here's how.

SPF only tells you half the story

SPF measures protection against UVB — the rays that burn. But most of the ultraviolet light hitting your skin is UVA, which penetrates deeper, drives premature aging, and contributes to skin cancer. SPF says nothing about it.

That's why the single most important word on the label is "broad spectrum" — it means the product is tested to protect against UVA as well. But as that 2022 study showed, UVA is exactly where many products fall shortest, so "broad spectrum" on the front is a floor, not a guarantee. To go further, look at the actual filters.

The filter question: does it sit on your skin, or soak in?

Sunscreen actives fall into two camps:

• Mineral filters — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Larger particles that mostly sit on the skin's surface and reflect/absorb UV.
• Chemical filters — avobenzone, octinoxate, oxybenzone, homosalate and others. These absorb UV, and FDA studies have detected several of them in the bloodstream after use.

The mainstream dermatology position is that FDA-permitted chemical filters are effective and that the best sunscreen is the one you'll actually wear every day — a light chemical formula you reapply beats a heavy mineral one you skip. That said, if you'd rather minimize what absorbs into your body — during pregnancy or nursing, for sensitive skin, or for kids — a zinc oxide sunscreen is the reliable choice, because it stays on the surface and covers both UVA and UVB well.

How much zinc oxide you actually want

If you go the mineral route, concentration is what matters — not just the SPF number:

• 15% zinc oxide is the floor for meaningful UVA protection.
• 20–25% zinc oxide can carry a broad-spectrum sunscreen on its own.
• Below 15%, or a formula using titanium dioxide as the only active, tends to skew toward UVB and under-deliver on UVA.

So a mineral sunscreen advertising a big SPF with only, say, 8% zinc oxide is a yellow flag — which brings up the next trick.

Watch for "SPF boosters"

Some formulas raise their SPF number with additives like butyloctyl salicylate or tridecyl salicylate rather than more UV filter. They can nudge the tested SPF up without adding the same broad-spectrum (especially UVA) protection real filters provide — a practice some chemists bluntly call "SPF doping." The tell: a high SPF paired with a low active-filter percentage. When you see a booster high in the ingredient list, check that the zinc oxide (or other real filter) is still doing the heavy lifting.

What's new in 2026

For the first time in over two decades, the FDA approved a new UV filter — bemotrizinol (sold abroad as Tinosorb S), cleared in June 2026, with products allowed to include it from August. It's photostable and strongly broad-spectrum, and it finally gives US formulators a modern option beyond the usual list. Expect it to start appearing on labels; it's a genuine upgrade for UVA coverage.

The rule that beats every label

Here's the part no formula can fix for you: you have to use enough, and reapply. Most people apply a fraction of what's tested, which is a big reason real-world protection lags the label. Use about a shot glass (one ounce) for your body and a generous two-finger amount for your face, and reapply every two hours — and right after swimming or sweating. Under-applied SPF 50 can perform like SPF 15.

Which means the sunscreen that protects you best is, above all, the one you'll happily put on every morning and reapply without dreading it. Texture matters as much as chemistry.
