It Went on Sale After You Bought It. Here's How to Get the Difference Back.

You bought it Tuesday. On Friday it's $40 cheaper. Most people shrug and feel slightly cheated — but at a lot of retailers that $40 is still yours, sitting behind a short window and a request nobody makes. It's called a price adjustment, and claiming it usually takes about two minutes.

Here's the shape of the thing you're claiming:

Price adjustment vs. price match — not the same thing

These get confused constantly, and asking for the wrong one gets you a no:

Price match — before or at purchase. You show that a competitor (or the store's own website) sells it cheaper, and they match it now.
Price adjustment — after purchase. The same store's own price drops within a set number of days, and they refund you the difference.

This article is about the second one. Say "I'd like a price adjustment" and you're speaking the store's own language.

The windows, by retailer

Policies change often and vary by item, so treat this as where to start, not gospel — confirm on the retailer's current policy page before you rely on it.

The Amazon exception worth knowing. Amazon dropped general price adjustments years ago. Two carve-outs survive: televisions sold and shipped by Amazon (price drop within 30 days → they refund the difference), and the Pre-order Price Guarantee (you're charged the lowest price between ordering and release day). Beyond that, contacting support sometimes yields a one-time courtesy refund — that's discretion, not policy. Treat a win as a bonus, never as a plan.

The two-minute claim

Vague asks get vague answers. Name the thing, cite the number, and be pleasant — the person on the other end can usually just do it.

Copy-paste script

"Hi — I bought this on [date] for [$X], order number [#]. I see it's now [$Y] on your site. I'd like to request a price adjustment for the difference, please."

That's the whole thing. Online, use chat and paste it. In store, take the receipt to customer service. Three details do the work: when you bought it, what you paid, what it costs now.

What to do when they say no — or there's no policy

A "no" isn't the end of it. Work down this ladder:

Return and rebuy. If the return window is open but the adjustment window has closed, returning the item and buying it again at the lower price gets you to the same place. Two cautions: make sure the item is genuinely in stock before you return anything, and don't do this repeatedly at the same retailer — return abuse flags exist and accounts do get restricted.

Escalate once, politely. Front-line staff sometimes don't know the policy. Asking to check with a supervisor, or trying online chat after an in-store no, is often the difference. One escalation is reasonable; three is not.

Credit card price protection is mostly gone

This used to be the safety net, and it's worth stating plainly rather than sending you on a hunt: the major issuers have killed it. Chase, Citi, Discover, and USAA have all discontinued price protection across their cards. The reason is unglamorous — price-tracking tools made claims so easy that the benefit stopped penciling out.

Note the network detail on that last row: it rides on World Elite Mastercard, not on Capital One as a brand — a Capital One Visa generally doesn't have it. Check your own card's Guide to Benefits rather than assuming, the same way you'd check any of the other perks sitting unused on your card.

Make it automatic

The reason people miss this money isn't laziness, it's that nobody re-checks the price of something they already bought. Two habits fix it:

Set a price alert on anything expensive the moment you buy it. Price-history trackers (CamelCamelCamel, Keepa for Amazon) will email you on a drop — and the alert lands inside the window instead of months later.
Do a monthly receipt sweep. Once a month, open the last few weeks of orders and spot-check the big-ticket ones. Ten minutes, and it pays for itself the first time it works.
